I went on an on-campus interview and stayed overnight in a faculty apartment at the college. My host was rushed to get out of there after dinner and never left me a number to call if there were problems nor did she show me around the space. A few minutes after she left, I unpacked and started getting ready for bed, only to realize they never cleaned the place and replaced linens after the previous candidate. The towels were dirty, the bed wasn’t made, the pillow still had a head imprint in it and a very long, pretty strand of brown hair from the previous night’s guest.
I was glad I had my own pillow at least, but I was pretty astounded at the lack of care my hosts showed in creating a welcome interview experience for me. Ever since, I’ve been very attentive in making sure my own candidates feel welcome and get a clean, comfortable space to sleep.

Well, at least you knew that this wasn’t a place for you.
